ICOMAA-NA's Commitment to the Student Hostel Project and Alumni-Driven Solutions"

Dr. Modupe Sokunbi, President ICOMAA-NA, welcomed everyone to the meeting. She then
presented ICOMAA-NA’s mission, vision and main areas of focus.

She emphasized that these were essentially identical with those of our parent body ICOMAA-WW.

She emphasized the importance of world wide alumni engagement for all alumni -related activities including the fundraising for essential projects like the Students Hostel Project.

Executive committee members then introduced themselves, sharing their
medical and professional backgrounds and their commitment to the mission and vision of ICOMAA-WW.

They expressed their delight at the emergence of Professor Omokhodion as new ICOMAA-WW President and pledged their full and enthusiastic support.

Dr. Titi Britto and Dr. Dolamu Sokunbi discussed the Endowment Fund while Dr. Tunji Akintilo talked about the Mentorship Program.

Dr. Adeyinka Williams Akinboboye expressed pride in the College of Medicine in maintaining Accreditation.

Dr. Bola Akinlade expressed support of the College initiatives and need for Accountability.

Dr. Bisi Oshinkanlu gave an update on the Global Sponsor a student project.

ICOMAA Canada was represented by Dr. Yomi Sobowale President and Dr. Leke Badmus, Secretary.

They gave an update on the collaboration between ICOMAA Canada and the College of Medicine.

Prof. Samuel Omokhodion provided insights into the operational challenges faced by the University of Ibadan, the College of Medicine and the University College Hospital including hiring policies and general poor funding issues. He therefore stressed the need to be strategic in the choices of projects for execution leaning in favour of those that have long term relevance avoiding the ‘knee-jerk’ response.

The student hostel project as an example will address accreditation and actual student needs for a long time to come. As another example, he detailed the progress of the Institute for Cardiovascular Research and the Centre for Cardiovascular Diseases detailing the many challenges still facing the completion of these projects.

But we press on because when completed they will serve needs across a wide spectrum of beneficiaries for a long time.

He highlighted the need for continuing financial contributions and volunteer professional expertise to support ongoing projects and prevent institutional collapse. He also emphasized the need for mobilizing community support on healthcare initiatives and the potential impact that would have on sustainability of such programs.

Prof. Omokhodion addressed concerns regarding bureaucratic hurdles and transparency in the use and accounting of donations and gave assurances that ICOMAA-WW accounts are operated independently and with rigorous auditing processes for full transparency with full adherence to the specific wishes of all donors.

The meeting concluded with a focus on close future collaboration on ongoing and future projects.
