Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association, North America, Inc
The North American Branch of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association was incorporated in the USA in 2001 as a non-profit tax-exempt organization with 501(c)(3) Status.
Members includes graduates in Biochemistry, Dentistry, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology and Physiotherapy; as well as postgraduate degree holders in the medical sciences.
Dr. Toks Owo was the founding President and there were forty-three foundation members who embarked on the mission of engaging fellow alumni and “Giving Back to a Center of Excellence”. Since that time, our numbers have grown and there are currently over 1500 alumni in North America.
The Medical school (Faculty of Medicine) was founded in 1948 with 14 students, as the University College at Ibadan, an external college of the University of London. In 1962, two years after Nigeria’s independence, the University College became the University of Ibadan with independence from the University of London.
As the oldest and most prestigious medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, the University Of Ibadan College Of Medicine has been a center of excellence in learning for seven decades; it has played a pivotal role in furthering clinical medical research in Africa and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2018. The two year celebration was named “Atunji” marking the renaissance of the College. In addition to branding all major College events, a series of lectures to be delivered by distinguished lecturers (heroes and distinguished alumni) has been planned. Professor Adeboye Osunkoya (Emory University) delivered the first lecture on 7th February 2018, at the Paul Hendrickse Hall.
ICOMAA North America seeks funding from all alumni and friends, and from corporations and foundations for scholarships, endowments, capital improvement projects and medical equipment at the University of Ibadan College of Medicine. Our vision is to promote and support the educational, teaching and research activities of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria while networking effectively with other ICOMAA Alums by building a very strong and viable branch in the United States of America.

The week of June 22 2020 marks 40 years since the faculty of Medicine became a semi-autonomous College of medicine and numerous activities to mark this milestone have been scheduled, tempered by the gathering sizes and social distancing mandated by the COVID-19 pandemic The University of Ibadan has trained more doctors than any other medical school in sub-Saharan African, and has eminent graduates in Biochemistry, Dentistry, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology and Physiotherapy. As of 2016, the college had more than 16,800 alumni worldwide distributed among the various disciplines
The College receives 75% of all biomedical research grants in Nigeria and produces 75% of all publications from the University of Ibadan.
ICOMAA North America with over 1,500 members in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean has a goal to nurture fellowship among the alumni and to support the Ibadan College of Medicine and maintain its position as an internationally renowned center of excellence for teaching, research, and clinical care.
The Virtual Donor Recognition Wall acknowledges those individuals and corporations, who through their generous donations, have made it possible for ICOMAA North America to make a start on her vision to “give back to a center of excellence”.
